The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states primarily located in Europe, established in its current form by the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. Iceland, though not a member, has a close relationship with the EU through the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement and the Schengen Area, integrating it into the EU's single market and allowing free movement of people. There is ongoing debate in Iceland regarding potential full EU membership, with a referendum planned for August 2026 to decide on resuming accession negotiations.
