Ríkislögreglustjóri

Stofnun

The Ríkislögreglustjóri, or National Commissioner of the Police, is a central institution in Iceland responsible for the daily administration of the police force and civil protection. The office oversees various administrative tasks related to law enforcement, acts as a liaison between police commissioners and the Ministry of Justice, provides support to local police commissioners, and manages large-scale police operations requiring collaboration among multiple police units. The Ríkislögreglustjóri also directs civil protection efforts and includes specialized departments for economic crimes, international affairs, and research and analysis of terrorism and international criminal activity. The office has faced criticism, including a recent controversy in late 2025 regarding significant payments to a consultancy firm, which led to the resignation of the then-National Commissioner, Sigríður Björk Guðjónsdóttir.
