Höfuðborgarsvæðið, also known as the Capital Region or Greater Reykjavík Area, is one of Iceland's eight regions and its only metropolitan area. It encompasses the capital city of Reykjavík and six surrounding municipalities in southwestern Iceland. Despite being geographically smaller than other regions, it is the most populous, housing over 60% of the country's population, with 249,054 inhabitants as of 2025. The region is a significant economic and administrative center, with nearly 25% of its labor force engaged in professional and administrative work, including government offices.
