Sameinuðu þjóðanna, known in English as the United Nations (UN), is an international organization founded in 1945 with 193 member states, including Iceland. Iceland became a member of the UN on November 19, 1946, and actively participates in its various initiatives, particularly focusing on human rights, gender equality, sustainable development goals, and international peace and security. The Icelandic United Nations Association (Félag Sameinuðu þjóðanna á Íslandi), established in 1948, works to promote the UN's values and activities within Iceland, with a special emphasis on youth education and public engagement.
