The Landhelgisgæsla Íslands, also known as the Icelandic Coast Guard, is a civilian law enforcement agency responsible for maritime safety, security surveillance, and search and rescue operations in Iceland's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. Established on July 1, 1926, it also handles national defense tasks, including operating the NATO Iceland Air Defence System, explosive ordnance disposal, hydrographic surveying, and nautical charting. The organization played a significant role in the "Cod Wars" disputes over fishing rights in the 1970s.
