EFTA

Stofnun

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organization promoting free trade and economic integration among its four member states: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Iceland is a member of EFTA and, along with Liechtenstein and Norway, is also part of the European Economic Area (EEA), which grants them access to the EU's single market. The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) and the EFTA Court ensure that these EFTA states comply with their obligations under the EEA Agreement. In 2023, following an admonition from the EFTA Court's Surveillance Authority, regulations concerning blood extraction from pregnant mares in Iceland were brought under the relevant directive, as Iceland had been found in breach of EEA law regarding the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.
