Norður-Írland is one of the four countries that constitute the United Kingdom, located in northeastern Ireland and bordering the Republic of Ireland to the southwest. It has a population of approximately 1.8 million people, making up about a third of the total population of Ireland and 3% of the UK's population. The region has a complex history marked by conflict between its predominantly Protestant unionist and Catholic nationalist communities, with the Northern Ireland Assembly established after the 1998 Good Friday Agreement to manage many policy matters while ultimate power remains with the UK government.
