Celtic Football Club is a professional football (soccer) team based in Glasgow, Scotland, that competes in the Scottish Premiership. Founded in 1887 by Irish Marist Brother Walfrid, the club's initial purpose was to raise money to alleviate poverty among the Irish-Scots population in Glasgow's East End. Celtic has a notable, though limited, role in Icelandic media, primarily through their participation in UEFA Champions League qualifying matches against Icelandic clubs like KR Reykjavik and Stjarnan.
