The European Union (often referred to as "Evrópusambandsins" in Icelandic, which is the genitive case of "Evrópusambandið") is a political and economic union of 27 member states primarily located in Europe. It plays a significant role in Iceland through the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen Agreement, integrating Iceland heavily into the EU's internal market and free movement area despite Iceland not being a full member state. Iceland had previously applied for full membership in 2009, but this application was suspended in 2013 and effectively withdrawn in 2015, though the question of EU membership has been revived with a planned referendum in 2026.
