Herjólfur is the name of the ferry service that connects mainland Iceland with the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), primarily sailing between Landeyjahöfn and Vestmannaeyjar. It plays a crucial role in providing transportation for passengers and vehicles to the islands, which are a significant tourist destination and home to a local population. The current Herjólfur, the fourth vessel to bear the name, is a hybrid ferry that began operation in 2019, capable of carrying up to 540 passengers and approximately 75 vehicles. In adverse weather conditions, the ferry may reroute to Þorlákshöfn, resulting in a longer journey.
