Öræfi

Staður

Öræfi is a western region in Austur-Skaftafellssýsla, Iceland, situated between Breiðamerkursandur and the Skeiðará river, and surrounding the Öræfajökull volcano. The name "Öræfi" means "wilderness" or "desolation" in Icelandic, a name it acquired after the devastating 1362 eruption of Öræfajökull. The region is known for its dramatic landscapes, including glaciers, mountains, and coastlines, and is home to a significant portion of Vatnajökull National Park, which includes the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnúkur.
