Halldór Laxness (1902-1998) was an Icelandic writer and the only Icelander to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he received in 1955 for "his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland". He is considered the most significant Icelandic literary figure of the 20th century, known for his novels, poetry, plays, and essays that often explored Icelandic life, social issues, and philosophical questions. His notable works include "Independent People," "Salka Valka," and "World Light."
