Stofnun

Sorpa is a municipal waste management company in the Reykjavík area, founded in 1989 as a non-profit, municipality-owned firm. It is responsible for receiving and handling waste from households and businesses in Reykjavík and six surrounding districts, serving approximately 70% of the Icelandic population. Sorpa manages raw materials for recycling, operates recycling centers, a receiving and sorting station, a landfill, and the GAJA gas and composting plant. A new, larger recycling station at Lambhagavegur is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026, which will replace three existing reception stations.
